demo policy

Backscatter is always accepting demos from new projects for compilations and individual release. We are usually, but not exclusively, looking for electronic music. We consider many genre-hybrids and other possibilities. Acceptable formats are CD or DVD in audio or data form. You may send us a link to some of your music, but please do not email any audio files to us without requesting to do so first! Include pictures, links and other interesting information about your project, meaning, give us a reason to care.

When mailing, please write your e-mail address and/or name on every piece of material you send in case of separation. You will receive an e-mail confirmation when we received your demo. Please do not email to inquire if we have listened to/liked your demo. Be assured that we listen to every demo we receive and if we feel we can work with your music on a compilation or as a full release then we will contact you via email. If you have not heard back from us within 1 (one) months time, consider our silence a "No, Thank you." We do not return any material that is sent to us, so please don’t send anything that is considered irreplaceable. Looking forward to hearing your music!

CD Mastering - $15.00 per track -or- $150.00 per album [up to 15 tracks]
Mastering is the final creative step in the audio process where your tracks are optimized to commercial standards for clarity, definition and punch before being sent for manufacturing. Mastering is both an art and a science. It's the process that can change a "demo" quality recording into a "commercial" sounding product. It's not just about frequencies and loudness, it's also about the "musicality" the mastering engineer can bring out in a project. Unfortunately, however, this process is not a "cure-all" for a poorly recorded or poorly mixed project. Although it may help somewhat, it cannot turn a bad recording or mix into a good one.

One important aspect of mastering is to make sure a mix is transportable -- in other words, to optimize it so it sounds as good as possible on any playback system. Also, individual tracks within a project often vary and are marked by subtle differences in sonic quality due to the fact that they were either recorded over an extended period of time -- or that they were recorded in a variety of locations. These individual track nuances become even more noticeable when listened to back-to-back. It is extremely important that the finished project have a "technically" coherent sound -- a feeling of unity and cohesiveness and a consistency of character. In order to accomplish this, we use a variety of digital mastering tools to create a well-crafted and sonically balanced project while always respecting the creative talent and intent of the artist. With the subtle and judicious use of these mastering tools, we can assure a finished project that's clean, yet warm and polished. Whether you're an independent artist or a small/mid-sized label, we can give you that major label "radio-ready" sound you've always wanted. In today's highly competitive music market, having your project professionally mastered is critical!

Budget Mastering - $100.00 [up to 80 minutes]
If you've just completed a new project and are really satisfied with the overall results, but still feel it needs a few tweaks, this option may be all you need. Budget Mastering is a flat-rate alternative to the standard mastering process. Of course, it is not a substitute for achieving a top notch recording, but if you just need to tweak your CD with a fairly small investment, this may just be the answer, a great choice for tight budgets!

Budget Mastering takes a GLOBAL approach to mastering. In other words, the entire CD project is handled as if it were a "single" song. Each track is processed exactly the same -- what's applied to one track is applied to all. Tracks are not dealt with individually on a song-by-song basis. Therefore, this approach is most effective when there is already a reasonable degree of consistency from track-to-track in the overall quality and sonic/tonal character of the tracks.

1 - Projects must be submitted with the tracks already sequenced in the correct/final song order.
2 - This package is limited to a single CD of 80 minutes or less.

Audio Restoration and ReMastering
After speaking with clients and reviewing a restoration project, we first determine what kind of approach to take, to either strive for a finished recording that sounds as good as the original, or try to make it better than the original. Old, damaged and "inferior" sounding recordings can be significantly improved by removing a variety of unwanted background noise such as tape hiss, clicks, pops, crackling and other problems. This results in a sound much truer to the original recording.

This process is most effective when the program material contains an "isolated" section of the noise to be removed. For that reason, it is best to provide us with the original recording [unedited and unaltered] that way, the noise and any other offensive audio problems can be sampled and analyzed outside the audio program itself. Every effort is made to achieve the best possible results with the minimum amount of processing, so as to avoid unwanted audio artifacts or other residual processing anomalies.
